Dispatch #7: My epic Hurtigruten voyage from Bergen to Kirkenes

This week, Lighthouses of Norway photographer Sigrid Thorbjørnsen is sailing on Hurtigruten's ship MS Finnmarken from Bergen to Kirkenes. These photos were taken on the seventh and last day into this northbound voyage.

Arriving Vadsø, in calm water and drizzling rain, I had an instant feel of Zen. ©2012 Sigrid Thorbjørnsen.

Traditionally, fishing has been the main industry here and as early as in the sixteenth century, Vadsø was a large fishing village. Today Vadsø is the seat of the county council for Finnmark and tertiary service industries have become more important than the primary industries. ©2012 Sigrid Thorbjørnsen.

The majority of the 6,200 inhabitants of this council area live in the town of Vadsø, but some of them have remained in the other small communities. ©2012 Sigrid Thorbjørnsen.

Nature is all around you. Vadsø is a service town, and there are many cultural events and festivals here during the year. I will come back to check out what they have to offer. This looks like a great little town. ©2012 Sigrid Thorbjørnsen.

The stop in Vadsø was short, and, again, I find myself on the sixth deck looking at the horizon, the ocean, and feeling the rhythm of the boat. This is my last stretch. Hurtigruten is on its way to Kirkenes, the last port on the northbound voyage, and my stop. ©2012 Sigrid Thorbjørnsen.

As we pass the rocks, autumn color-covered rocks, I reflect on this voyage, this last week, the wonderful people I've met, the stunning scenery my country has shown me, the wonderful staff working on MS Finnmarken, and the power of the ocean. ©2012 Sigrid Thorbjørnsen.

As I see how the leaves and little bushes cling to steep mountain sides, I just know I will never forget this epic journey. What a wonderful way to get to know my country. What a way for my foreign friends to see my "neck of the woods." ©2012 Sigrid Thorbjørnsen.

The small town of Kirkenes is known as the capital of the Barents Region and the gateway to the East. This is where I end my journey. It feels strange to walk on solid ground, and it feels weird to experience life outside off a ship and outside my cabin. ©2012 Sigrid Thorbjørnsen.

A random street in Kirkenes. I am fresh off the boat. Or is the boat fresh off the ocean? Well, this is where my journey ends. It has been an adventure. Never in my life, will I forget this week. ©2012 Sigrid Thorbjørnsen.
