Dispatch #1: My epic Hurtigruten voyage from Bergen to Kirkenes

This week, Lighthouses of Norway photographer Sigrid Thorbjørnsen is sailing on Hurtigrutens ship MS Finnmarken from Bergen to Kirkenes. This is her dispatch from day one.

This morning I started off in Stavanger. Between Stavanger and Bergen there is only one option of transportation for me, traveling by Bus4You. ©2012 Sigrid Thorbjørnsen.

Not once traveling with this company have I had a grumpy bus driver – they have all been great. ©2012 Sigrid Thorbjørnsen.

Even though today was a rainy day, the trip was good. Two ferry rides make the distance seem shorter. ©2012 Sigrid Thorbjørnsen.

I arrived Bergen in rain. ©2012 Sigrid Thorbjørnsen.

The first thing I do when I come to Bergen, is to grab a cup of coffee and have a piece of the best chocolate in town at Moliere. ©2012 Sigrid Thorbjørnsen.

Rain or shine. If you ever are in Bergen, make sure to taste the caramel chocolate with sea salt. It might sound strange, but man, this is the best chocolate mix in the world. ©2012 Sigrid Thorbjørnsen.

It was time to hit the Hurtigruten terminal. ©2012 Sigrid Thorbjørnsen.

The people at Hurtigruten’s reception desk were friendly and it was great to be greeted by smiles. This set the tone and was a pleasant start of the journey. ©2012 Sigrid Thorbjørnsen.

It was time. Time to enter MS Finnmarken, my home for this week. What an honor this is to be traveling on one of the three millennium ships. As I was embarking on MS Finnmarken, I saw the whole ship was getting ready for the voyage. ©2012 Sigrid Thorbjørnsen.

It was my time to snoop around. The ship was clean, and the lines and curves were awesome. ©2012 Sigrid Thorbjørnsen.

I went to deck six and watched Bergen in rain. ©2012 Sigrid Thorbjørnsen

Check-in time. My spacious cabin has a TV, Internet access, a sofa, view, fold-out bed for more space during the day, original artwork on the walls, and a bathroom. This is where I lay my hat. This is my home for a week. ©2012 Sigrid Thorbjørnsen.

I went back on deck to get another, last view of Bergen. ©2012 Sigrid Thorbjørnsen.

I met a French-speaking, happy family. Already settled in, they chose to leave Bergen in style. What a great way to say goodbye to Bergen! ©2012 Sigrid Thorbjørnsen.

The journey has started. Departing from Bergen at 8PM. I'm so exited! ©2012 Sigrid Thorbjørnsen.

As we leave Bergen, we pass the Askøy Bridge. ©2012 Sigrid Thorbjørnsen.

Askøy Bridge behind us, and the rest of the journey ahead of us. To be continued. ©2012 Sigrid Thorbjørnsen.
