Slideshow, day 4: My epic Hurtigruten voyage from Bergen to Kirkenes

This week, Lighthouses of Norway photographer Sigrid Thorbjørnsen is sailing on Hurtigruten's ship MS Finnmarken from Bergen to Kirkenes. These photos were taken in the morning of September 6, between Nesna and Bodø in Nordland county. This morning we crossed the Arctic Circle, which means we're now officially in the Arctic, and the area of Norway that has midnight sun in the summer months. Scroll down if you prefer to watch this as a slideshow.

Vesterålen is also the name of the area in which Hurtigruten's first home port, Stokmarknes, is situated. ©2012 Sigrid Thorbjørnsen.

Now, we are in the northern part of Norway approaching the Lofoten islands. Situated between Nesna, Ørnes and Bodø is Saltfjellet mountain where Svartisen glacier is. This area of Norway is quite narrow and the Norwegian-Swedish border follows the mountain range north and south. This morning we also crossed the Arctic Circle – we’re now officially in the Arctic.

The mountains have sharper peaks than what we saw in the Trøndelag and mid-Norway regions, where they are much softer and also less tall.
